Partnerships
The College of Extended Learning provides opportunities to partner with other colleges, departments, and individuals, inside and outside the University's boundaries. Although these partnerships provide diverse populations with varied services, they all promote education in New Mexico and all seek innovative solutions to educational issues.
Creative Media Institute for Film and Digital Arts (CMI)
CMI grew out of Governor Richardson's support for New Mexico's growing film industry. Degree programs are under the Bachelor of Individualized Studies; they provide students with a liberal arts background that enables them to pursue further education, professional training, or the professional industry in digital filmmaking and animation. For more information, contact cmi@nmsu.edu.
First Year Scholars Program
Addressing the difficult issue of retention for freshmen, the First Year Scholars Program is a two-semester comprehensive learning experience designed for incoming students who are interested in full-time study leading to a baccalaureate degree. Through increased interaction with other students, faculty, and NMSU services, NMSU hopes to help more students successfully navigate their freshman year. This program was created by Student Services, the Provost's Office, The Center for Learning Assistance, and the College of Extended Learning. For more information, contact Ms. Valerie Martinez.
Regional Educational Technology Assistance (RETA)
Created through the US Department of Education's Technology Innovation Challenge Grant, RETA assists with professional development and technology-based curriculum for New Mexico's K-12 teachers. RETA also offers a test-preparation workshop for American Indian teaching candidates to help them prepare for the New Mexico Teaching Assessment exams. For more information, contact Dr. Susie Bussmann.
Sloan Semester
This partnership with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation meets the educational needs of people affected by the fall 2005 hurricanes. Over 130 universities from all over the country offered online distance education classes to students and others displaced by the storms. NMSU's mini-courses attracted 23 of these students, including several members of baseball team from the University of New Orleans.
Student Access via Online Resources (SAVOR)
A grant from the US Department of Agriculture Hispanic Serving Institutes Program will fund a degree completion program for NMSU's School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism. Other partners include the College of Extended Learning and Northern New Mexico College. For more information, contact Dr. Priscilla Bloomquist.
Virtual Classroom
This partnership will establish a virtual community for computer science in New Mexico funded by the National Science Foundation. NMSU Department of Computer Science is working with Northern New Mexico College and Crownpoint Technical Institute, a tribal college to promote computer science education through regular visits and distance education offerings from NMSU.
