Project MESH

The College of Extended Learning, in collaboration with the Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Engineering, is the home of Project MESH (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Hybrids), an NMSU program funded by the Minority Science and Engineering Improvement Program. This U.S. Department of Education program assists predominantly minority institutions in effecting long-range improvement in science and engineering education programs and increasing the flow of underrepresented ethnic minorities, particularly minority women, into science and engineering careers. Project MESH, is moving toward these goals in three directions:

  1. Summer Institutes for high school students and secondary teachers, team taught by a mathematician and scientist, that combine the fields in a meaningful application that is accessible to students who have completed mathematics through high school Algebra II.
  2. Web-based Courses based on the Summer Institute materials that will be dual-credit and available to high school and community college students.
  3. Calculus Umbrella Sections, a required recitation component for the first two semesters of calculus, that reinforces the connections between mathematics and science and engineering applications.
