How do biologists predict where species should be found? How do biologists investigate the growth of biofilms that plug up your water filtration system? How do biologists determine how species are related to one another? How do biologists anticipate the course of epidemics of emerging pathogens such as SARS and hantavirus? Answers to these questions come from an interplay between observations (whether in the field or laboratory) and mathematics. We will be exploring that interplay using a variety of biological, computational, and mathematical tools for visualization. Prerequisites: One year of high school biology will be very helpful.
