Graduate Certificate in Online Teaching and Learning

Courses

OTL is a Graduate certificate program consisting of five three-credit courses, that can be completed in as little as one year.

Synchronous sessions

Introductory session
At the beginning of every semester (including summer), an introductory session will provide you with an overview of that semester's courses and the program, prepare you to use our course technology, and give you an opportunity to meet the instructors and other students.

These session will be held face-to-face and online simultaneously using web-conferencing software. If you cannot attend, a recording of the introductory session will be available.

Scheduling information for this session will be provided with your application confirmation.

Course sessions
Some of the courses provide opportunities to meet online synchronously. Details will be provided in the course syllabi.

Fall semester courses

CEL 560 Fostering Online Learning Communities
Examines theoretical and practical aspects of communication and collaboration and their impact on the formation of online learning communities.

CEL 570 Designing and Organizing Learning Environments
Explores the theories, models, approaches, technologies, and methods of online teaching and adult learning to provide a foundation for all other certificate courses.

Spring semester courses

CEL 580 Tools and Techniques for Online Teaching
Examines the theoretical and practical implications of various asynchronous and synchronous tools and their impact on teaching and learning through research and hands-on experience.

CEL 590 Assessing and Evaluating Online Teaching and Learning
Explores a variety of online assessment and evaluation options with an emphasis on continual assessment and evaluation to improve teaching and learning.

Summer semester course

CEL 595 Online Teaching Practicum
In this directed study, learners will research online teaching and learning strategies for a specific discipline or topic area and develop an online learning unit. Learners teach the online learning unit developed and serve as critical reviewers providing feedback that demonstrates cumulative knowledge and skills acquired.

Prerequisite: The other four courses must be taken before enrolling in CEL 595.
