Bachelor of Individualized Studies
Getting Started
To apply to the BIS degree program, you must be admitted to NMSU. See NMSU's Prospective Students website for more information and to apply online.
Once you have been admitted to NMSU, make an appointment with an advisor at the College of Extended Learning. The advisor will review your academic history, including transfer credits from other institutions. The review will establish your general education requirement status, your lower and upper division credits earned, and your GPA. This information will help you complete the BIS application.
Part One
- State clearly, in writing, your career or educational goals and why a traditional degree program does not meet your needs.
Part Two
- In consultation with your advisor, design a program of study that meets these career or education goals from part one goals.

Application Review
You should have your application reviewed by your advisor before you submit it formally. The Associate Dean of the College of Extended Learning reviews all materials before admission decisions are made. In making admission decisions, faculty from other colleges and academic programs related to your past experience and future academic goals may be consulted.
Application Time Lines
You may submit an application any time during the academic year. You will be notified of your status within two weeks by email and a letter of acceptance will be sent to your mailing address.
